'The Awakening' was a solitary ritual journey taken by Jill Smith in 1982, and partly inspired by a form of Tibetan Buddhism ('Dzog Chen'). Sleeping in the open air for much of it, the journey was documented by Smith in poetry and prose and by means of the photographs above, taken at sacred sites throughout the British Isles.
