Trevor Bell was born in Leeds in 1930 and studied at the College of Art there. During the 1950's he was a leading member of the artists working in St Ives, and in 1958 he had a successful one-man exhibition at the Waddington Galleries in London. He later became a Gregory fellow in painting at Leeds University.

After a large travelling retrospective in Scotland, Ireland and England in 1970 and a major one-man show at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1973, Bell established a studio in Tallahasse, Florida.

In 1985 he was included in the Tate exhibition St Ives 1939-1964. Bell returned to the UK in 1996, and has shown at the Tate Gallery, St Ives. He lives and works near Penzance.
