This is the Sea

'These photographs are from a new body of work, realized over the last 15 years, and have been made around the coastlines of Europe.

The images utilize the photographic effects of artificial lighting and offer ways to invest the terrain vague with new cultural meanings.  Such scenes are transformed, from ones that are already spectacular into yet more powerful ones that are coloured, edited, more hyperreal and illusory.

They have become revisualised and thrilling, yet at the same time, they no longer appear physically solid, being a simulacrum of themselves that leaves us feeling estranged...'

Patrick Shanahan, March 2009
